Angoves Family Winemakers
Web: www.angoves.com.au
In 1886, Dr WT Angove came to Australia from Cornwall as a ship’s surgeon with his young family. He established a medical practice at Tea Tree Gully. Along with other doctors at the time, including Doctors Lindeman and Penfold, he commenced cultivating the vine and making wine. This was the beginning of the company that has grown to become one of the largest family-owned winemaking companies in Australia .
In 1910 Dr Angove was succeeded by his son Thomas Carlyon Angove, who made the pioneering move to establish a winery at Renmark. From that visionary move, unrecognised at the time, the Riverland has gone on to become the largest wine grape growing district in Australia, and the very backbone of the booming export activity that is keeping the Australian wine industry well and truly in global focus.
In the early 1920s, T C Angove spent considerable time studying the production of brandy and decided that there was a better way to make a clean fresh spirit compared to the very heavy muscat style brandies that were common at the time. The result was the beginning of the St Agnes Brandy label. This style revolutionised the Australian brandy market. Those efforts have resulted in St Agnes being Australia ’s market leading and most highly awarded brandy today.
After World War II, Thomas William Carlyon Angove took over from his father as Managing Director of the company. In 1965, he conceived and developed the first ‘bag in box’ package, commonly called the ‘cask’ – a world first for wine. This innovation substantially developed the infrastructure of the wine making business.
In 2002, John Angove, the fourth generation became Chairman and Managing Director focusing on the development of the sales and marketing side of the business.
The fifth generation of family members, John Angove’s daughter, Victoria, has commenced work with the company in the sales and marketing department, and his son, Richard, has completed studies in marketing and wine making and is making wine around the globe before focusing on the family business.
Today Angove’s is ranked as the 10th largest winery in Australia and the 9th largest Australian wine exporter by volume.
Angoves were inducted into the FBA(SA) Hall of Fame in 2002.
